FAQ
What’s therapy? Therapy; also known as psychotherapy or talk therapy, is a treatment aimed at relieving emotional distress, managing diagnosed mental disorders, and explore other aspects of life. People may choose to do therapy for a short period of time (often known as solution focused therapy) while others do therapy for an extended period of time. People of all ages, races, religions, backgrounds, and belief systems may find benefit to therapy. Therapy can also be individual (client + therapist/counselor,) couples, or family in nature.
What does therapy look like? For new clients, an intake (sometimes called an assessment) is the first session. This is where the therapist and client get to meet in order for both to explore is this a good fit and for the therapist to understand your history (medical, psychiatric, personal, etc) and needs for therapy. This first session often feels more like an interview compared to subsequent sessions. Most sessions can be expected to take 40-60 minutes.
How do I get started? To get started, check out the “contact” tab for my information, or check out the many great mental health resources in our area. Many individuals and offices ask that you call or email them in oder to see if scheduling an intake or sitting on a waitlist is an option. It can also be nice to know what therapy might look for your pocket book based on your insurance coverage or thoughts on self-pay (check out the “pricing” tab.)
Who do you see/what types of clients do you see? I work with all sorts of people from the ages of adolescent (10yo) and up. A majority of my work is done with individuals, but depending on the age and needs of that person individual therapy can also include sessions where other relevant people may join in, such as inviting a parent or guardian in. I also work with couples and families. I do work with a variety of needs (depression, anxiety, PTSD, et al.) but recognize that I may not always be the best fit, in which case we would look at external referrals and/or creating a support network.
Are there limits to therapy? There are some limits to therapy, just like there is for any modality. One such limit might be cost, as I don’t accept every insurance company and don’t offer sliding scales. Geography can be limiting factor as my license allows me to work in the state of Ohio and with individuals who are also in-state. New legislation, through the Counseling Compact, may allow for LPCs and LPCCs in good standing with their home state, to work out of their state lines. At this time, applications to join the Counseling Compact are projected to open in late 2025 as Ohio has passed the “language” to potentially approve LPCCs to join. Technology can also be an issue. I do offer telehealth through TherapyNotes HIPPA compliant portal, but this is not a best fit for everyone. If we were to find any barriers while working with one another, I will do my best to help explore available options.
What does cost look like? I understand that price can be a factor when choosing any intervention. I do choose to work with several insurance companies (please see pricing page for who I am currently paneled with). Though, the cost of appointments will still be dependent based on your behavioral health plan as each company sets a fee schedule (the price in which a therapist is reimbursed for the service provided) and has varying stipulations for copay, coinsurance, and if your deductible applies. To protect my time, I also utilize a no-show and late cancel policy.
